Making Tax Digital for Income Tax became mandatory in April 2026 and pulls people in over three years. VAT runs on a completely different clock. Answer what you know — "I don't know" is a real answer, and leaving a field blank is how you give it.

Making Tax Digital — measured on your last filed return Turnover before expenses on that return Turnover, not profit. Leave blank if you don't know — it will say so rather than guess. Which tax year was that? Already signed up for Making Tax Digital?

VAT — measured on a rolling 12 months, so it needs its own figure Already registered for VAT? Taxable turnover across the last 12 months Rolling — not a tax year. Leave blank if you don't know. If it has passed the registration threshold, which month? The deadline is counted from the end of that month, so without it the duty can be judged but not dated. Do you expect to pass the VAT threshold in the next few weeks? Only you can answer this one — no amount of source-checking settles it.
